Have You Visited Whitworth Museum?

Many people are unaware that Whitworth has a local Museum

Whitworth Museum was formed in 1973 and has a constant expanding electronic and hard copy database of local photographs, records and other documents.

The museum has helped people learn about the local area and even track their family history! Tracking your family history can be fun, rewarding and may even turn up the odd surprise or too. If you’ve lived in the local area for a long time and have a long history of family living in the area then the museum may have some documents relating to your family history, pop in and check it out. For those who don’t have local ties to the area and have just moved here, the museum still encourages you to come in, staff are on hand to help you get started tracking your family lineage.

Whitworth Historical Society & Museum are also wanting  to hear from anyone with any artifacts or photographs relating to Whitworth, which they might be able to add to their collection (or make copies of) but do take note, due to lack of storage space they have informed us that they can’t usually take items that don’t have any sort of link with the area. If you have anything you might like to donate or loan please do contact the museum.

They have a FaceBook Page, Twitter or you can always visit their Website Here.

The Museum also has a shop, where you can buy a number of interesting publications and souvenirs, covering both local history and other topics.

If you’re interested in finding out about the local history or want to make a start on your family tree you can pop into Whitworth Museum on Tuesday evenings between 7,30 pm – 9.30 pm or on Saturday afternoons between 2 pm and 4pm.

The museum also has an open weekend every year, this years open weekend is taking place between 15th/16th July and will focus on family history, feel free to add the date to your diaries and come along.

The map on the left hand side shows the location on the museum, the museum is just a short distance off the main road on Market Street.

If you are travelling by public transport there is a regular bus service through the valley, with stops just a very short walk from the museum. This service is the 464.

The museum also has regular lectures and events going on, so be sure to connect with them via their website and social media profiles mentioned above.

It’s took a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment from volunteers to keep Whitworth Meseum going and it’s a project the local community are very proud of. So if you’ve never been before, head on over there and have a look, you might be surprised at what you find in their archives and while the museums database is always growing, they’re always looking to add to their local history. So what are you waiting for? Come visit us and you never know you may become apart of the history that future generations come to see.
