Crimes Committed in Whitworth Increase by 39% Compared to Last Year
According to Police UK statistics, crime in Whitworth has seen an increase of 39% compared to this time last year.
The conservative led government have come under fire for policing cuts in the UK. Many local police forces have seen drastic reductions in local police officers as well as cuts to their budget, it is becoming increasingly difficult for local forces to function as they are feeling the effects of these cuts.
Since Theresa May was home secretary, total police numbers have fallen in England and Wales by 46,700 or 19.5%.
Many local policing desks have been closed or merged with other areas and many local police hubs have had their operational hours reduced.
The increase in crime and anti social behaviour has long been a concern of many residents in the local area, in June I conducted an interview with local MP Jake Berry, where I quizzed him on local policing and the lack of police presence in Whitworth.
Jake informed Whitworth Online that he understood there was an issue of anti social behaviour in Whitworth and that tackling such behaviour needs to be addressed and dealt with quickly. When asked about the reduction of policing in Whitworth, Jake said that the council was responsible for the funding of Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) and that he felt the council had given sufficient priority to maintaining the policing presence in Whitworth.
During the interview, Jake Berry also stated that he feels we have the privilege of living in one of the safest parts of the country and that the overall crime rate has seen a reduction.
The full interview with Jake can be listened to on the video below, 15 minutes in is where we discuss local policing.
We have the great privallage of living in an area of the country where it’s one of the safest places to be. I think the fact the rate of crime has come down consistently over the last few years is a real tribute to our local police officers. – Jake Berry MP
Many people will suggest that Mr Berry is out of touch with reality. When comparing the number of reported crimes to that of last year, it is clear that there is a significant increase in the overall crimes being committed and reported in Whitworth. This totally contradicts Mr Berry’s claims that the overall crime rate has seen a reduction in the area.
Whitworth Online has reached out to the local police force for comment, we have yet to receive a response. We will update this article with any official recorded response, should we receive one.
